Weather extremes all over the world have both experts and novices questioning whether global warming is real or fabricated. However, if thought of in terms of the impact a rise in temperature can have on the overall global atmosphere, then it would stand to reason that extremes in weather would or should be expected. If current weather we are having in South Mississippi can be labeled as extreme, it wouldn't be the first bout of extreme winter weather that South has experienced. In 1999, we had similar cold snaps. In December of 1989, actual temperatures dipped into the teens and on Christmas Eve the Bay (Bay St. Louis) froze over almost in it's entirety (except the channel). We experience sleet and freezing rain that day along with wind chills in the -30s. In March of 1993 we had a 3-inch record snowfall at the beach. Scientists certainly can massage data in ways to support almost any potential cause for the extremes we are seeing worldwide, but maybe, just maybe it's simply cyclical. And maybe just a bit of global warming superimposed in the cycle. The future will tell if this is a trend or a cycle, I suppose. There you have, my two cents on this very cold winter morning in South Mississipp. BTW - Did I mention it was 21 degrees this morning when I went to the gym at 445am??? What do I know, though, I am a geologist turned Information Technology geekygirl who lives with a Meteorologist.... Stay warm everyone - The Saints are two games from the superbowl, so maybe it's just Hell Freezing Over!!!
