Blizzard in Louisville This Week?

Hello Weather Geeks,

I am in Louisville and need a critical forecast. I have two children I need to fly to Gulfport by "stand-by", but that is a long story. The NWS is putting out hints that they are expecting a "major winter weather event" before the weekend. This also appears to be a very dynamic scenario that may be hard to predict. What do you think about travel? Get out before Thursday (LOU to GPT), or wait until after the weekend?

Also, interesting weather trivia. We had 54 mph winds last night, and Louisville was under it's 5th "High Wind Warning", which was an all-time record for one month. Records here go way back to the Civil War, though I don't think the did "High Wind Warnings" then. Did they?

HLG - you are right that this is a tough one to predict. The GFS shows most of the moisture to the south of Louisville - and no major snow storm for central/northern KY. However, if the moisture is able to move north faster than predicted, it could get ugly. I'm afraid it is a coin toss right now - and the NWS office advises that it won't be able to provide an accurate forecast until a day before the storm. So you can use the quad test -

It snows It doesn't snow
Fly 1 2

Don't Fly 4 3

(Fly means fly on the weekend - Don't fly means they leave before Thurs)

1 - It snows and they fly on the weekend - bad news.

2 - They fly and it doesn't snow - good news

3 - They don't fly and it doesn't snow - no big deal

4 - They don't fly and it snows - no big deal to you

Sounds like the safest bet is to get them out before Thursday.

We drove home last night and just got in. Slept through the winds and rain from a few days ago.
