BUOY WAVE HEIGHTS...

Observations from 42003 - very close to the eye of Gustav, on the northeast side.

I have to admit, I didn't expect 30 ft wave heights from this storm. Definitely will have a role with the storm surge along the coast. Models are tracking a bit further to the west... but I'm really surprised by the wave heights - some of the highest we've seen from buoys in the Gulf.

Clarification on 42003 - the highest wave heights recorded by this buoy were Katrina - with 11 meter heights. For this storm, we are seeing 10.5 meter heights. Still, quite high for a "weakened" storm. I fear that people might leave their guard down and be surprised by a higher storm surge than normal.

Death of a Buoy - Buoy 42003 again gave its life in service of taking observations in a harsh environment. The buoy stopped reporting about 1100 CDT after recording a 34.4 ft significant wave height. Remember, significant wave height is the average of the highest one-third of all of the wave heights during the 20-minute sampling period - so there were waves higher than 34 ft during the sampling period.
